Horizontal Machining Services

Rapid Precision Manufacturing offers Horizontal Milling for fast and accurate production of complex parts.

In manufacturing, there’s an old saying that your parts can be delivered fast or right, but not both. This is a costly truth for those companies relying on machine shops with outdated processes and tools. At RPM, we aim to manufacture and deliver high-quality, tight-tolerance parts quickly. That is why we invest in the latest machining technologies like horizontal milling.

The Difference Between Vertical and Horizontal Milling

The most common type of CNC milling is vertical. In vertical milling, a vertically-oriented spindle holds and rotates a cutting tool against a workpiece.

Another less common type of CNC milling is horizontal. In horizontal milling, the spindle is oriented horizontally or parallel to the ground.

The Advantages of Horizontal Milling

Horizontal milling machines are very efficient for a multitude of reasons. Because of their orientation, horizontal mills perform the milling process at multiple angles. These computer-guided machines reduce human error and are built to produce high volumes of a part with tight tolerance and fewer interruptions.

Due to their ability to more efficiently evacuate chips from the surface of the workpiece, horizontal milling machines create parts with a cleaner surface finish.

Because they can be outfitted with multiple tools, horizontal milling allows for creating a complete set of parts, rather than just a single part at a time. In a horizontal mill, operators can load parts while machined. In this way, horizontal machining increases the efficiency of the manufacturing process, even for more complex parts.

Horizontal Milling Applications

Horizontal milling machines are ideal for producing parts with slots and holes or parts that must be machined on multiple sides and angles.
